if you’re gonna build your whole brand in intertextuality, if you’re gonna sell your media as something we’re supposed to see as a single work of art that is made by a bunch of different creators in a bunch of different mediums then maybe i don’t know… you should make sure everyone is aware of this? maybe you should have people working on it who know what the story is about?
and it’s kind of insane that this happens in multibillionaire companies like disney. you have a lot of budget to hire a team of writers who are willing to put the effort to make a cohesive narrative across different mediums, but you choose not to? then what’s the point? if you’re gonna contradict your own movies/shows/comics/books because you can’t be bothered to check your earlier work then don’t insist on selling the concept of intertextuality??
one of the biggest examples ofc are the mcu. there is usually no consistency in characterization. ideas are repeated. events are conveniently forgotten by the plot. concepts supposedly based on the source material are completely void of any semblance to it apart from the name and maybe one main quality. your own actors have no idea what they’re doing or what they’re talking about.
at this point you notice writers and directors arent working on movies about [x]. they aren’t thinking of how they can work with this or that character. they’re making their own movies using the names and brands of the company to be able to market it

The Coen Bros are writing generally-liked long fic AUs Whedon writes big-ass crossovers that have a lot of kudos but people also kinda snark at Loki and Wandavision are canon-divergent character studies and Taika Waititi is the fandoms favorite Thor stan who just writes really good, really hilarious crack.
Jesus Christ, I was making a joke about how “fanfiction” gets used to smear the work of female and queer creators but when men do it it’s praised and considered art. The response was tongue in cheek.
Because it *IS* marvel fanfiction, because the Coens, Taika, Joss, whoever else wrote these films, did not come up with the characters and are reinventing old stories and tropes from 50 year old comics. These people being very good writers doesn’t mean that they aren’t writing stories based on pre-existing established characters.
Good fanfiction can and very much does exist.
If you think “fanfiction” is automatically an insult and that non-famous creators and writers (who are very often women, POC, queer or some combination thereof) don’t have interesting, important things to say about race, politics, colonialsim, fascism or any of the other themes marvel movies touch on then I don’t know what to say to you.

Any story which refers to Haiti as an impoverished nation, which is all of them, should also mention that when Haitians won their independence from France, French gunships showed up and demanded they pay something like 22 billion dollars in today’s money to compensate France for the stolen land and enslaved people they could no longer exploit
It took Haiti over a hundred years to pay that ransom and it’s difficult to explain just how badly that fucked up their entire development, especially since France also demanded a 50% discount on everything they bought from Haiti just to make it harder. Like! No wonder they’re impoverished!
Anyway if France would like to assist Haiti in its current difficulties they could always pay back the fucking money they extorted
